Girls at the Lake

I was commissioned by a good friend from high school to paint this picture of her two beautiful little girls. She sent a few photos for me to choose from, but I loved the ones of the girls near the lake with the reflection of the water, the rocks and old log. I love any opportunity to include nature in my paintings.

Technique: I used a wet on wet technique to paint the water of the lake. Water is placed on the paper first then paint is placed onto the water to create the look of the lake. To create the rough look of the log, I used a scraping technique in which I used a knife to actually scrape the paper then I painted over the scraped areas. I also used this technique to create the rough look in the rocks. To create the white dresses I left most of the paper showing without using any paint at all. In watercolor it is always an advantage to use the white of the paper when you can.
